HOUSTON — Road trip! The tribes are gathering in Houston!

The occasion is Thorne Dreyer’s 70th Birthday Bash and Rag Blog Benefit. It’s all happening Sunday, August 2, 2015, from 5-8 p.m., at Baba Yega Cafe, located at 2607 Grant St. in Houston’s legendary Montrose neighborhood.

And everybody’s welcome!

(For the record, Dreyer’s birthday is really August 1.  So big deal: He only missed by one day, so cut the old dude some slack.)

Houston native and Austin resident Dreyer, a long-time political activist and pioneering alternative journalist, edits the Austin-based Internet news magazine, The Rag Blog, and is host and producer of the weekly syndicated Rag Radio program. The Rag Blog is a digital-age rebirth of Austin’s historic Sixties underground newspaper, The Rag. Dreyer was The Rag‘s original “funnel” in 1966.

Thorne Dreyer was also a founding editor of Houston’s Space City! in 1969, was a programmer and general manager at KPFT-FM, the city’s Pacifica radio station, and for years ran a major Houston political public relations firm.

Baba Yega is a venerable Houston institution that has been serving Dreyer “just one more” margarita since it opened its doors in 1975. The party will take place in the lovely Jasmine Room and will feature a sumptuous buffet and cash bar, and live music featuring Guy Schwartz, Bobby Bridger, Billy Bourbon, and more.

The event is free but donations will be greatly appreciated — to cover costs and to support the New Journalism Project, a Texas 501(c)(3) nonprofit that publishes The Rag Blog, sponsors Rag Radio, and produces community gathering and educational events. Donations are tax-deductible.

For those unable to attend, please go here to help in our work in creating digital-age progressive-activist journalism in the spirit of the Sixties underground press.

The Rag Blog‘s Alice Embree is co-host of Thorne Dreyer’s 70th Birthday Bash and Rag Blog Benefit.
