Singer-Songwriter Charlie Faye — and a lively group of musical friends — joined us on Rag Radio, Friday, February 7, 2014.

Rag Radio is a weekly syndicated radio program produced and hosted by long-time alternative journalist and Rag Blog editor Thorne Dreyer and recorded at the studios of KOOP 91.7-FM, a cooperatively-run all-volunteer community radio station in Austin, Texas.

Singer-songwriter Charlie Faye and friends present a musical tribute to American musical icons, Carole King and James Taylor.

Charlie, one of Austin’s most accomplished and innovative musicians, is joined in performance and discussion by Lonnie Trevino, Jake Owen, Noëlle Hampton, and Wendy Colonna.

(Charlie and even more friends presented their second annual Tribute to Carole King and James Taylor that night at the Cactus Café, a venerable acoustic venue in the University of Texas Student Union in Austin. And it was a rousing success.)

Charlie Faye‘s latest release is You Were Fine, You Weren’t Even Lonely. Her 2010 album, Travels with Charlie — recorded in 10 different cities over a 10-month period — won critical acclaim and broke into the top 10 on the Americana Radio Chart.

Charlie is also a noted music community organizer in Austin, especially around the issue of affordable housing. A front-page story in the Austin American-Statesman outlined Charlie’s efforts to save a musicians’ enclave of cottages in South Austin.

In addition to saluting the music of Carole King and James Taylor, and discussing how the two musical icons served as musical inspiration for them, Charlie and friends addressed challenges facing the Austin music community and other topics related to the contemporary music scene.

Rag Radio is hosted and produced by Rag Blog editor Thorne Dreyer, a pioneer of the Sixties underground press movement. Dreyer was a founding editor of the original Rag, published in Austin from 1966-1977. Tracey Schulz is the show’s engineer and co-producer.

Rag Radio has aired since September 2009 on KOOP 91.7-FM, an all-volunteer cooperatively-run community radio station in Austin, Texas. Rag Radio is broadcast live every Friday from 2-3 p.m. (CST) on KOOP and is rebroadcast and streamed on Sundays at 10 a.m. (EST) on WFTE, 90.3-FM in Mt. Cobb, PA, and 105.7-FM in Scranton, PA. Rag Radio is also aired and streamed on KPFT-HD3 90.1 — Pacifica radio in Houston — on Wednesdays at 1 p.m. (CST).

The show is streamed live on the web and, after broadcast, all Rag Radio shows are posted as podcasts at the Internet Archive.
