Few would agree that LBJ’s domestic agenda was sacrificed for Viet Nam. His fame after all is for his tremendous success with Congress. He passed civil rights, medicare and other programs thought impossible at the time, because of his formidable legislative skills.
He sacrificed Viet Nam, our soldiers, our dollars, their country, to “look tough” and not as though he were passing civil rights legislation from fear of the riots then spreading across the country.
I heard the tapes of LBJ talking to McNamara on Bill Moyers Journal last week. They talked about how many troops to send, where to send them, wether it would do any good, about the Generals and on and on. I did not hear him say, “You know I promised the American people not six months ago that I would not send American boys to do what Asian boys should be doing for them selves.” Obviously the power corrupted him in a minute. What a freakin fake. He took my cousin Freddy’s leg, slimy politician that he was.
