Shade Tree

when you come to my house

you are allowed to plant a tree

and after you leave

I will water it along

and nurture it well

as it reaches toward the light

and keep it safe from harm

even if you don’t return

but if you ever do

we will sit beside your tree

and celebrate life

in all its many forms

and watch your tree grow

and shelter under its boughs
